Chapter 9

Three somber boys entered the kitchen, followed by a stoic Wyatt.

Missus Gray began to gush over them, happy that Matthew was safe. When she offered them cups of hot cocoa, Wyatt told her they were not to be rewarded for doing something dangerous. Mark and Luke were just as guilty as Matthew for worrying all of them. They were going to have a family talk.

June was going to take the girls and sit in the parlor when Wyatt said, “No, please, June, stay. You are part of the family now; regardless of what Matthew says, you’re their mother. You were kind enough to allow Matthew to call you Missus June. He can continue to use that name, but the foolishness will stop today. No more acting rudely or running off. We discussed sending them to jail or having them sleep in the loft. But I think Matthew should stay here in the house, in his room, when he’s not doing chores for the next week. I hope it will give him time to think.”

Matthew’s mouth opened, but he closed it again and just stared down at the table.

“You boys will all have extra chores. Mark and Luke, not only did you help your brother run off, you also lied to my face when you said you didn’t know where he was. At least you didn’t pull John into your lies. I’ll make sure you have enough chores to keep busy. Now, go take care of your horses and finish with the barn,” Wyatt said.

The three older boys left the kitchen quietly, and John looked at Wyatt and said, “I’m sorry Pa.”

“What are you sorry about?”

John shrugged. “I dunno. They didn’t tell me Matthew was leaving, but we’re brothers, so I’m guilty, too, right?”

Wyatt smiled at his youngest son and said, “John, you are not responsible for your brothers unless you help them do something they shouldn’t. Even then, you’re not responsible for their behavior, but you are responsible for your own. Do you understand?”

John’s head bobbed. “I think so. It means they did it and not me, and I’m not in trouble, but I can’t help them do wrong stuff.”

Wyatt bit back a laugh. “That about covers it, John. You keep doing good things, and everything will be all right.”

“I can help the girls stay out of trouble, too. They don’t know a lot, Pa. I can teach them,” John said.

“That’s a good idea. June and I will be happy if you help your sisters.”

“Your Pa is right. I think if you watch over the girls, that will be a big help. They’ve never lived on a ranch, and they can learn a lot from you,” June agreed.

John’s smile brightened his entire face, and he promised to teach Rose and Lily everything he knew. June wasn’t sure how much that was, but she knew John would help the girls with whatever he could.

Wyatt said he’d better go out and ensure the boys were doing their chores.

John told the girls he’d read them a book, and Rose and Lily followed him into the parlor.
